CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Cunningham technique is challenging, but also fun to do. It's a modern dance technique created by Merce Cunningham. People that worked close to Merce, say that he didn't want his technique to be codified but flexible. The technique was developing through years and it still changes. In the class we use legs in both parallel and turn out positions, and torso in few basic ways : curve, arch, tild and twist, with many variations possible, with a characteristic for Cunningham technique lower back curve. We work on allingment and building core strenght as well as moving through different speed and qualities. The count changes happen often - we can have exercise that we count on 3 or on 8, as well es exercise on 7, 5 or 10 etc. Rythm is something essential in Cunningham technique - we work towards developing inner rythm, inside the dancers body. (When you watch the performances of Merce Cunningham Dance Company you will notice that they dance to the music that has often no particular rythm going together with dance - thats why its neccesary to remember the rythm by dancers themselves, together with all the rythm changes).
Class begins with series of back and leg exercises, proceeds into adagio and moving across the floor that may contain moving adagio, triplet phrases, exepts from repertory and other combinations. Class finishes with series of small and big jumps.
No experience in the Cunningham technique is neccessary to attend the class, but some dance experience will be helpful. Everybody is welcome!

Our last rehearsal we spend "in the wild". We had to move because of a lot of crazy and big mosquitoes to somewhere, where is more light and less trees. The mosquitoes had been following us for a while and then decided to go back to the forest.
It rained just an hour ago, so the grass was fresh and clean! (and wet)
Having warmed up we proceeded working on the opening "scene" of a piece.
It had been a lot of work with abstract conecptions, and how to "make them move".
It involved a fair amout of group work, check out the slideshow below!
We are very excited to start putting the stuff together.
We are getting it moving! Stay tuned!

Few days ago we had a 4th rehearsal in a beautiful studio near the Wisła river. Check out the photo gallery below!
We started with some powerful and emotional Butoh exercises and we proceeded into developing material we created last time. Stay tuned for upcoming open rehearsal dates!

25 escapes from this - update

during rehearsal
We just had 3rd rehearsal to my new project, with a working title "25 escapes from this". In that I'm going to explore the way we turn away from reality when the big problems arrive. Sometimes those escapes can take from us a great amount of effort for creating an the imaginary land or situations, and our denial to be ourselfs can turn into enormous struggle, or greatest relief.

Very soon, I'll be starting to teach Introduction to Cunningham regular technique class in one of the studios in Warsaw Centrum area.
I value this technique a lot, and although my work is very different from what Merce Cunningham technique has to offer, I do take inspiration from it and I know that through it, one can gain a lot of n phisical strenght and enlarge mental capacity of a dancer. It strenghtes your core, teaches you how to move through space and to be clear about the shape and rythm. I highly recommend it to any dancer.
